Luring vs. Shaping

Two ways to get a behavior, when to reach for each, and how to fade the help so the dog owns the position.

Luring

A lure uses food to guide the dog into position. It is fast and clear, but it comes with a cost: the dog can become dependent on seeing the food first.

Shaping

Shaping rewards successive approximations, letting the dog problem-solve its way to the finished behavior. Slower to start, but the dog owns the result.

Fading the help

Whichever you start with, the goal is the same — get the food out of your hand and off the dog's nose as fast as the behavior allows, so the position stands on its own.
