The problem with command-first training
Most handlers start by teaching their dog to sit, down, and heel. It feels like progress — the dog does the thing, you reward, everyone is happy. But under trial stress, that obedience is brittle, because it was never anchored to a dog that wants to be working with you in the first place.
Engagement is the anchor. It is the difference between a dog that complies and a dog that participates.
What engagement actually is
Engagement is the dog's active, offered attention — freely given, not commanded. When you have it, the dog is checking in with you constantly, ready for the next piece of information. When you don't, every command becomes a negotiation.
You cannot command engagement. You can only make yourself worth engaging with.
Reading the dog
Watch for the soft, loose body and the quick head-turn back to you. That check-in is the behavior we are going to build everything else on top of.
